The Originals 2x10: Gonna Set Your Flag on Fire

Previously on The Originals: Big diamonds, body jumping, Lesther’s a vampire, Hayley and Elijah, and baby Hope, oh my!

Yay! It’s back! I missed our southern gothic friends, didn’t you?

The Original Dysfunctional Family Drama

There’s nothing more wholesome and fun than a lock-in! The supernatural creatures stay in, the humans stay out, and wacky hijinks ensue. Alas, nothing for the Klaus Krewe is ever that simple.

Klaus brings Cami to the safe house to essentially babysit Elijah with booze and therapy while he and Hayley head back to New Orleans to take care of Finn. Elijah is less than impressed with Klaus’ plan or Cami’s psychobabble, but that’s neither here nor there.

Finncent, furious that his mother has been taken away, has put a spell on the compound. The vampires and werewolves are locked in together, ravenously hungry, until Lesther is safely returned. He’s bordering on manic as he rants to Mikael, pounding a skull open and smarmily saying he could use Mikael’s strength. Finncent is a great believer in the Complicated Villain Speech, which he employs several times during the episode. (Klaus receives all the points for faking static and trying to get him to repeat it all over again.)

The idea, of course, is to get the vampires and werewolves to turn on each other and leave no man standing. (Tell that to new boyfriends Josh and Aiden, who are all over each other until the hunger kicks in.) Finncent didn’t count on Kol and Davina doing a spell to render every magic object – including daylight rings and the compound itself – useless. The werewolves escape, led by Jackson and Hayley, while the vampires stay behind, unable to use their daylight rings, and watch Kol hungrily.

Speaking of Jackson and Hayley, Hayley takes Klaus’ advice and decides to come clean with Jackson about her fling with Elijah. Visibly hurt and wanting to know if Hayley is in love with Elijah, Jackson eventually comes around and proposes to Hayley, telling her he loves her and acknowledging that he knows this is all less than ideal. Hayley accepts his proposal – and giant diamond ring – for the good of the pack. It’s all very bittersweet, and one this season’s best plotlines – you have to assume Jackson will treat Hayley better than Elijah is capable of right now, especially with his Lesther-induced mental trauma.

Meanwhile, Rebekah is still trapped in the body of another witch, who has her voice and attitude down pat. Stuck in a witch asylum with other witches “broken by magic,” or just the original owners of Esther’s body jump vessels, Rebekah starts seeing the ghost of 90s pop-punk chanteuse Avril Lavigne. Ghost Avril makes tiles move around, wanting to know who Human Rebekah is, and leads Rebekah up to the attic. Locked in the attic is a glass coffin (clearly no one in the asylum is interested in dusting) with a woman’s body inside. It turns out that, surprise! It’s the body of long-assumed-dead sister Freya. (Does this mean that Dahlia is lurking nearby?)

All is not well for the most psychotic Mikaelsons, though. When Finncent goes to heroically rescue his poor mother, he finds that she is transitioning into a vampire. This doesn’t sit well with Mr. Manic, who rages that he can’t believe she gave into temptation and drank blood. (As much as I hate Finncent’s character, I love what this actor is doing with Unhinged Finn.)

The Original Mythology

- Finncent is still channeling dark objects, making him more powerful.

The Original Body Count

- No one died! Unless you count Lesther.

The Original Elegant Uncle Elijah Ruined Suit Count: 4

- Cami ruined another of Elijah’s shirts (.5), setting off one of his “UNCLEAN UNCLEAN” spells.

The Original WTF

- Kol likes absinthe.

- Did Cami seriously yell “Yahtzee!” when she found booze?

The Original Joseph Morgan Award For Tortured Hot People

This week, I’ve got to give it to Jackson, who doesn’t push Hayley to love him back. Will she ever fall for him? Will he take his shirt off? These are the important questions that plague us.

Next episode: The vampires are still trapped in the compound, and Marcel has a werewolf bite.

So what do we think? Did Finncent try to kill Lesther? Do you like the Hayley/Jackson/Elijah/pack storyline?
