Cover Story: Simple Silhouette
This cover is keeping things simple and to the point. It reminds me of the silhouette I got from Disneyland when I was little. Only I have a perky little braid coming off the back of my head in mine.
The Deal:
In this short story, a very brief prequel to Inherit the Stars, we meet Lady Asa and her older sister, Lady Wren, who is Base Commander of some sort of space station. A space station that’s seriously struggling, thanks to lack of food and energy. Asa is trying to keep spirits up, but first—there’s a rat that needs killing.
BFF Charm: Maybe
Asa seems like a sweet girl. She obviously cares a lot about her sister, and the circumstances they find themselves in. It’ll take a bit more for me to decide if she’s true BFF material, but for now, I can see a promising future.
Swoonworthy Scale: 0
There’s no swoon in this story. (But I hear there’s some in store in the full book!)
Talky Talk: Tease
Inherit the Stars: Reprieve gives us a peek into the world Tessa Elwood has created for her upcoming series, which begins with Inherit the Stars. And I do mean a peek. The story is really too short for any major world-building, but it does a good job of introducing the main character and foreshadowing some of the tensions to come.
Bonus Factor: The Future
I’m a total sucker for anything sci-fi, so a story set on a different planet—and featuring advanced technology—is right up my alley.
Anti-Bonus Factor: Familial Tensions
There’s only the slightest hint in Inherit the Stars: Reprieve of the relationship between Asa, Wren and their father, but that hint speaks volumes. I have a feeling that things are going to get uncomfortable for everyone involved.
Casting Call:
Hailee Steinfeld as Lady Asa
I didn’t get a feel for any of the characters’ looks in this brief story, but something about Asa’s personality reminded me a lot of Hailee.
Relationship Status: We’re Just Getting Started
Although our time was short, Book, it was sweet. I’m looking forward to our next date, and glad that it’ll be much longer.
