The Originals 3x16: Behind the Black Horizon

Previously on The Originals: One by friend, one by foe, and OMG, still with the prophecy. Klaus took Hayley and Hope on the run. A returned from the dead Kol has uncontrollable blood lust and anger issues. Finn is back, being miserable. Vincent sold Freya out to Lucien, at the ancestors’ behest.

The Original Dysfunctional Family Drama

Lucien made a deal with the witch ancestors when he arrived in New Orleans; if he had access to the regent, he’d rid them of the original vampires. And he drags Freya and Vincent back to the place of her origin, Mystic Falls, in order to replicate Esther Mikaelson’s spell, so he can become (an upgraded) original vampire.

Vincent left a recording for Davina, and a vile of his blood, so she’d know about Lucien’s plan for Freya, and use it to track them. She and Kol enlist Elijah and Finn’s help, but Kol is a powder keg, and Finn is a self-righteous pain in the ass. Elijah and Finn head to Mystic Falls, while Davina and Kol get some black magic artifact from Cami to work some witchy ritual.

Once in Mystic Falls, Elijah and Finn end up getting some reluctant help from Matt Donovan to get to Freya and Lucien. Finn takes quite the risk in shooting Lucien through Freya’s chest, assuming they can heal her with vamp blood, and buy some time. However, since Lucien already took the magical serum, this just completes his transition to indestructo vampire. After kicking everyone’s ass, Lucien bites Finn.

Hayley stashed Hope with Grandma Mary for a few days. (So she and Klaus can tour some of the more risqué parts of Appalachia?) He decides to let his siblings look for Freya, and they’ll go after the Kingmaker connection. They discover some horrific scientific experiments being done on wolves and vampires to reverse engineer werewolf venom for Lucien. They heal everyone there, and Hayley sends Klaus home to help Finn. She learns that Lucien harvested venom from all seven wolf family descendants to use in his hybrid spell. Then she burns the building to the ground.

Holy Fang

Kinder, gentler Klaus is fascinating. Also, since this episode was directed by Joseph Morgan, I wonder if this is a side of Klaus he’d like to play more often.

WTF, Finn? I thought they couldn’t die! That whole scene was strangely affecting, considering I never cared for Finn. But damned if I don’t buy into that “always and forever,”

Team Davina and Vincent against those bossy ancestors!

Winners and Losers

Winner: Lucien. UGH. This guy is every bit as bad as the insufferable du Martells. Especially, since he’s to blame for keeping Aurora in the picture. But it is a bit interesting that he found a way to use science to become an even more dangerous vampire/werewolf hybrid.

Loser: Freya. Finn was ready to die. But Freya has only just regained her family after a thousand years, so it’s especially heartbreaking to see her lose any of them again.

Original Snark

“Last year, when Esther first brought us back, I got put into the body of a gormless twit.” Unlike me, Kol 1.0 is not a 2.0 fan.

“900 years in a box, and zero patience.” HARSH, Elijah. Meh, it’s Finn, so I can’t really blame him.

“And split up the team now? Just when I’m discovering your "Carpool Karaoke" skills?” You guys, I think Klaus might actually be having fun.

“Matthew Donovan. How adorably inconvenient. Unfortunately, we don’t have time to play right now.” Oh c’mon, Elijah. Just once, for Katherine’s sake?

“Finn, isn’t it? Sorry, I suck at names, but I never forget a face. Especially when it’s one I’ve already killed.” DAMN, Matty Blue Blue.

Haunting Questions

- We haven’t seen much of Cami lately. Do you get the feeling the show doesn’t quite know what to do with her as a vampire?

- So, Kol seems to also be cursed to do the ancestors’ bidding. Are you worried? Or can you not bring yourself to care at all?

- Can you even believe Aurora is still a thing? I CAN’T EVEN, y'all.

Please come commiserate in the comments!
