Swimfantage: Science Bros

FYA-Land, please join us in welcoming our newest member to the team, Mandy Curtis! We're pleased as punch to have her, and we hope you enjoy her awesome LadyNerdom as much as we do. (And in case you were wondering, the answer is yes, this IS an excellent excuse to break out the champers.)

You guys, I love The Avengers. Love love, as in I’m already thinking of how I can get my husband to let me name an eventual son Loki Phillip Anthony Steven Bruce Thor Clint Curtis.

One of my favorite parts of the movie was the camaraderie between Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, and their bonding over the science behind it all. The rest of the Avengers fandom was equally as enamored with the two, if the thousands of posts on Tumblr are any indication. Even Marvel seems to be getting in on the action, with the—SPOILER ALERT—total fan service of the post-credits Iron Man 3 scene.

That scene got me thinking yet again about how much I love Tony and Bruce, and that thinking led me down a rabbit hole of swimfannery that ended up at this video.

Quality: Medium

The quality of the audio and video is pretty decent, with the exception of a few of the interview clips, and the song and the audio/video clips are meshed quite well. The color quality is pretty iffy at times, but I can understand what the creator was trying to do with the green and red filters. The typeface used over the initial interview clip, however, is atrocious. Also—If we’re watching this video, I’m pretty sure we know what roles Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo play.

Expertise level: Expert

The creator of the video is definitely a Science Bros fan. She (I’m assuming the fan’s a she, since her YouTube username is xxXXxwhatsername) gets at the high points of the relationship between the two that blossoms during The Avengers. I appreciate that she hits, briefly, at the slashy depths to which some fans will go, but then plays it off with an RDJ chuckle. (Science Bros is a platonic thing, guys. Stony is the Avengers relationship I’m OK with things getting slashy in.)

Song selection: Lyrically excellent

The combination of Iron Man and The Hulk, in my mind, is more of a heavy metal/70s rock pairing than a Panic! At the Disco one, but the lyrics to “Hurricane” are at times pretty spot-on with the Science Bros relationship.

Hey, hey! / We are a hurricane. / Drop our anchors in a storm. / Hey, they will never be the same. / A fire in a flask to keep us warm. / 'Cause they know, I know that they don't look like me. / Oh, they know, I know that they don't sound like me.

(Parts of it work with the slash idea, too, if that’s your thing.)

Swimfan Satisfaction (scale of 1–10): 9

I could have used a little more Loki, regardless of the fact that this video had nothing to do with him. (There’s a reason Loki is Future Baby Curtis’ first name.) But as far as the Tony/Bruce relationship goes, I think this video hits all the high notes, and includes a great selection of interview pieces with RDJ and Mark that made me smile.
