This Song Will Save Your Life As We Know It: A Cover Story by the Portland FYA Book Club (#FYAPDX)
It was just another wild summer evening at The Warehouse Club for teenage DJ Elise. While scratching beats with her best friend Vicki, Char, the enigmatic disc jockey nonchalantly asks her to play his newest remix. Unbeknownst to her, the music releases a signal to a deadly force that will change Elise’s life as she knows it.
The next morning, Miranda wakes up after a night of partying inside a giant crater covered in a thick, red coating of dust. Outside the crater she is surrounded by complete destruction and mass chaos. Confused and terrified, Miranda runs to The Warehouse Club, the last place she remembers before everything went black. Once there, she discovers Elise and her friends who are oblivious to the Armageddon that has erupted. With the outside world in ruins, Miranda, Elise, Char and Vicki are stuck inside hoping to wait out the mysterious wave of dust and rock. But then, Miranda begins displaying erratic, violent behavior, incredible strength, and dry, hard skin. Soon after these frightening turn of events, Char goes missing leaving behind a cryptic message explaining that the only remedy to Miranda and the world’s undoing is to perform the perfect song. Bewildered by what this could entail, Elise and Vicki set out to recruit any living music artists for help, meeting a host of colorful characters through the process.
Then, giant human-shaped asteroids start descending on The Warehouse begging to hear 50’s Swing and Motown music. Why have the asteroids arrived and how could Char be involved? Can Elise and Vicki really find the perfect song to save Miranda’s life before she is completely changed forever?
